Welcome to DollarMost, a place to find realistic tips, advice, and hacks to get the most from your hard-earned dollars.
We’ve seen the websites boasting ways to save money or make money – only to click and find impractical, impossible, or crazy-complicated ideas that often don’t work for everyday people.
I’m an everyday person. These aren’t tips, advice, and hacks coming from an office full of bloggers paid to come up with ideas – this is my life. My experiences. What has (and hasn’t) been successful for me in my never-ending quest to cut costs and make a little extra money.
I’m Amanda. An occupational therapist, a mom, and an enthusiast of all things frugal.
If you’re like me, you don’t have an endless budget. I’ve created DollarMost to share my experiences as I grow my skills in frugality, with the goal of helping myself and others save money (and make some extra money)…in realistic ways.
Before going any further, I want to clarify that there’s a difference between being frugal and being cheap.
What’s the difference? The short answer: Balance. Making frugal choices involves a balance of saving the most money while considering the quality of what I’m getting.
The lowest price isn’t always the smartest choice. I’ve learned this the hard way – many times.
- Like the time I got a “great deal” on a $3 watch that broke 6 weeks after I bought it. I then spent money on a new battery to try to fix my new watch…and, it wasn’t the battery – the gears broke.
- The time I “saved money” on a $6 cell phone charger from a discount store that took at least double the time to charge my phone than my other charger. Insult to injury – it stopped working completely after just 4 months.
- Or the time my husband and I “saved hundreds” by building a DIY raised garden bed from deconstructed pallets and metal sheet roofing. It worked – but it needed a lot of costly add-ons like paint, extra wood supports, rebar, plus much TLC to make it look presentable.
You may see tips and advice that aren’t the cheapest option…but, there’s a reason for that! I’m happy to share my follies as I go along to help you to avoid a “cheap” mistake.
So, stay awhile.
